How much do you know about lingual braces? Many people know very little, which makes sense if you consider just how discreet this orthodontic treatment method is. For those not yet in the know, lingual braces are very similar to traditional fixed braces… but with a few very key differences.
How are lingual braces different from traditional fixed braces?
- Lingual braces are attached to the back of your teeth rather than the front. This means that your teeth will benefit from a realignment treatment that’s every bit as effective as a traditional fixed brace, but no one will know they’re there!
- As the brackets for the braces have to be attached to the back of your teeth rather than the front, your orthodontist will use brackets that are completely customised to your teeth. No standard sized brackets here!
What are the benefits?
The major benefit of lingual braces is that you’ll feel completely comfortable wearing them. They won’t be visible when you talk, smile or laugh. In fact, no one will even know they’re there unless you tell them. Lingual braces are even more discreet than invisible aligner options such as Invisalign.
The comfort we’re talking about here isn’t just emotional. Many orthodontic patients find the braces more physically comfortable, too. The customised brackets help with this, as do their positioning. Because the brackets are on the back of your teeth, they won’t be able to brush against or irritate the inside of your lips.
We’ll end with another key benefit: lingual braces are suitable for everyone! They’re appropriate whether you have a minor or major malocclusion, and can be worn at any age.
