As specialist orthodontists we are thrilled to be able to offer our patients so many different treatment programmes. This is important as we believe that all orthodontic patients should be able to choose the treatment that’s ideal for them.
If you decide that a fixed brace is the right choice for you, you’ll then be able to choose which kind of brackets to use. This is very different to the past, when the only option available was metal brackets.
What kinds of brackets are there to choose from?
In addition to traditional metal brackets, patients can now choose clear acrylic brackets or ceramic brackets. You also have the option of choosing an invisible lingual brace (which is attached to the back of your teeth instead of the front) which comes with completely custom brackets.
How much of a difference will it make to your orthodontic experience?
There are two key ways that the type of brackets you choose will impact on your experience wearing a brace.
The first is comfort: many patients find ceramic or clear acrylic brackets more comfortable to wear than traditional metal brackets. If you have particularly small or irregularly shaped teeth, you may find that custom brackets make a huge difference to you.
The second way brackets can make a big difference is in how the brace looks. Clear and ceramic brackets are much more discreet than metal ones, and lingual brackets can’t be seen at all!
