Tips for nervous patients

It’s completely natural to be nervous before you start orthodontic treatment. After all, anything new can feel a bit scary. Our staff are all very used to working with nervous patients and have a lot of experience at helping them feel at ease.

If you’re feeling worried about an upcoming orthodontic appointment, here are our tips for making it go as smoothly as possible.

Do your research beforehand

People often feel nervous because they don’t know what to expect. The more research you do beforehand, the better you’re likely to feel about what’s ahead. Case studies and success stories can be a really great read if you want to put your mind at ease.

Ask all your ‘silly’ questions

When you meet your orthodontist for an initial consultation, please don’t be afraid to ask any questions you may have. Your specialist orthodontist will be more than happy to answer them; even the ‘silly’ ones! We think you’ll feel much more confident about your chosen treatment programme if you don’t have any lingering niggles or concerns.

Tell your orthodontist how you’re feeling

You don’t have to keep your nerves a secret! Our specialist orthodontists and support staff all want to make sure you have the best experience possible. If you tell them how you’re feeling, they’ll be able to help.

Listen to some music

Some patients find it soothing to bring headphones so they can listen to their own music. This can help to keep you calm and relaxed while your brace is being fitted.

Agree a sign for ‘stop’

You may feel happier in the ortho chair if you have a bit more control over the process. Some patients like to agree a sign for ‘stop’ before treatment starts. Something as simple as raising your hand will signal to your orthodontist that you’d like to pause for a few moments.
